GUB introduced this Department in Spring-2009 realizing the academic importance of such disciplines which are now being offered at public universities and many private universities of Bangladesh. Renowned sociologist and anthropologist Prof. Dr. Anwarullah Chowdhury was the promoter and founder of this department. The academic curricula of this department were developed in consultation with the experts nationally and internationally famous. At the Faculty level, there are scopes for interdisciplinary and cross disciplinary exposure through seminars and symposiums. Eminent foreign scholars often visit and meet the students. At the level of the department, teachers give advising and counseling to the students beyond formal class room lectures. Senior students are engaged to assist research monograph after intensive filed research. This creates the opportunity for independent thinking.
